In his first year in office President Obama declared October as National Energy Awareness Month, a national effort to underscore how central energy is to our national prosperity, security, and environmental well-being. At the time Obama said “We can allow climate change to wreak unnatural havoc, or we can create jobs deploying low-carbon technologies to prevent its worst effects.”
Kicking off a month of local energy awareness activities, Open Neighborhoods (publisher of The Open Daily) and the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign in Los Angeles are presenting the Westside Solar Tour as part of the National Solar Tour on October 1st, 2011. Attendees can RSVP for the event on Facebook or by contacting Spike Lewis at email@example.com or (310) 490-1477.
The tour will showcase innovative green buildings and homes and to demonstrate how homeowners can use energy efficiency, solar energy and other sustainable practices to reduce utility bills. The event is part of a nationwide series of grassroots events hosted by the American Solar Energy Society, which expects 165,000 attendees to view 5,500 buildings in 3,200 communities across the country.
The Westside Solar Tour will combine guided and self-guided tours of structures, including residences and businesses including The Sidewalk Cafe, The Brig and The Electric Lodge in Venice and Oasis Healing Center in Mar Vista.
The event will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn about solar power on an intimate level from neighbors who have already embraced solar energy. Topics explored with the owners will cover a range of issues, including why choose solar, researching solar power, choosing an installer, costs and financial incentives, the installation process, system design, effect on monthly electric bill, maintenance, etc.
Solar-powered residents and businesses in Mar Vista, Venice, and other Westside locations are invited to participate in the tour by signing up athttp://openneighborhoods.net/solartour.
